"Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4
Ever since I was in junior high, I wanted to write a book. My favorite subject in school was English class. I was the kid who got excited when the teacher assigned us a story to write, and then I wrote waaaay more than anyone would ever want to read. I had notebooks filled with stories that I started "just for fun." In college, I wrote for our school paper, but that was pretty much as far as it got.
When I was little, I had this book where I would write down stuff about each school year...my teacher, my friends, what I wanted to be when I grew up and such. Every year since 1st grade says the same thing. I wanted to be a mommy and a teacher. When I was in junior high, I could never figure out how I could be both...I wanted to stay home with my kids, but I wanted to be a teacher too. Well, years later God took care of that for me. After spending only a few years teaching in the classroom, I began to stay home and homeschool my own children, being both a mommy and a teacher.
So God "(gave me) the desires of (my) heart" in that I was/am both a mom and a teacher. But what about the whole writing thing? If writing was just meant to be part of my life when I was younger, then why did I feel like there was something more, something God had yet for me to write? A book? A magazine article? Nothing seemed quite right, and nothing seemed important enough for me to spend time writing and trying to get published. So I enjoyed being a mom and a teacher.
Fast forward some years, and I added to the list - mom, teacher, and helper to my husband in the photography business we started. Little did I know that as we ventured into the world of "business owner," not only would God bless me with the benefit of spending more time with Wes, but also "He (would) give (me) the desires of (my) heart" in a way that I never would have dreamed.
Recently, we redesigned our business website and added a blog. As Wes' time is spent mostly with photographing and editing things, I took up writing the blog. Then in the past few months, I also started writing these devotionals. I enjoy the actual writing aspect, but ugh, sometimes all the technical stuff makes me wonder if it is worth it. But then I remember why I am writing this. I can truly say that I feel like this is the writing God called me to do. This is the fulfillment of the desire that he placed in my heart.
What desires has God placed in your heart? Don't give up on them. He gave you those desires for a reason. You may never know this side of heaven why God gave you certain desires. I may never know why I am writing this devotional when there are plenty of other online devotionals floating around cyberspace. What we do know is that when God calls us to do something, he has a reason. Obey him and enjoy the fact that God is using you to touch others.
