Soap. It has become quite popular lately. I prefer to purchase the big refill bottles of liquid hand soap. In the recent weeks, I have searched store shelves only to find them void of soap, especially the kind I want.
Everybody is buying soap!
But, in order for soap to benefit you, there is one thing you must do...take it out of the container and apply the soap. We can stockpile all the soap we want, but if we don't open it up and actually use it, it does no good. (Here I must make a disclaimer and admit that the phrase "apply the soap" is not something original that I came up with. Wes discovered it in a youth group lesson book years ago. If I could recall the name of the book, I would give credit where credit is due).
It is the same with God's Word. Many people are digging into the Bible more these days and watching more online sermons than ever before. I saw a Facebook post recently, where a lady was listing off all the online messages she had heard one particular Sunday and then named others she was going to listen to later. That made me stop to think about all the online sermons I hear in a given week...sermons from Michael Todd of Transformation Church, from Perry Stone and others from Omega Center International, from Ron Carpenter, and from Carter Conlon and others at Time Square Church just to name a few...not to mention sermons from my own pastor.
In a sense, we are stockpiling sermons. Knowledge overload. But what good is it if we don't actually apply what we are learning. As it says in James 1:22, "Be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only." We need to take all that knowledge and apply it to our lives. Apply the soap. How can I be different because of what I read in the Bible today?
Now there is something to think about next time you are at the sink washing your hands for the recommended 20 seconds.
